I was one of those extremely fortunate kids whose mother was obsessed with horses. Growing up in LA, she never had an opportunity to have one for her own. When she married my Dad he purchased her very first horse – Kallany, who was a gorgeous seven year old black Arabian. I was just an infant at the time, and Kallany quickly became my keeper. He watched out for me from learning to walk, ride, show, and then twenty-six years later, taught me about death as well. He was the foundation to my entire career in horses, and also the reason that I have become the person that I am. Kallany was a wonderful, very versatile horse, and I was so privileged to have an opportunity to ride him western, on trails and in dressage at the end of his career.
I took lessons on Kallany for five years before we retired him, and he stole the arena. His presence was incomparable to any others, and he was so naturally elegant, that piaffe and passage came easy to him. When I was eighteen, I decided to go back to my western roots, and purchased my very first registered quarter horse, Gold for the Gusto “Gus.” Gussie was four months old at the time, and quickly became my obsession. I exposed that baby to everything I could, and hauled him to halter shows until he was riding age. The following year, after realizing how incredible quarter horses were, I bought my second one: Harlans Little Peppy “Houston.”
Over the next four years, Houston, Gus and I hit the road and went to every rodeo in the four state area competing in their ambassador program! We basically lived and breathed rodeo and have lots of wonderful stories and awards to show for it. During this time, I spent ten to twelve hours a day in the saddle, training my horses and outside horses as well. I learned all that I could from cutting horse trainers, team penners, ranch sorters, ropers, competitive trail riders and dressage riders. It was absolutely one of the happiest times in my life. After college, I decided that it was time to turn my weekend horseback rides into something more competitive again. From one week to the next, I had a barn full of horses in training and lesson students.
My dream is to teach every horseman the most efficient and respectful way to communicate with their horses and enjoy all the time that is spent with them. Horseback riding should be a fun,
gratifying experience, and having the knowledge and tools to get the results you want.
Makes all the difference!!
